Agema Miniatures

Agema Miniatures launched their first set of 28mm Plastic figures at Salute 2013, the company are a husband and wife team based in Bath, England.

Being Ancient wargamers themselves the team at Agema have focused on the Punic Wars as their first production period, with the release of the 28mm Velites in April 2013, the company are also using the popular Kick-Start program to get funding for their next venture - Punic War Roman Legionaries.
In the future they are planning to add sets of Carthaginian Citizen and Liby-Pheonician troops, as well as Spaniards and Celt-Iberians. They are also interested in the Hellenistic Wars.

Agema Miniatures - 28mm Republican Roman Velites

This is the first release by Agema Miniatures, the set contains 16 figures representing Republican Roman Velites (Light Infantry) from the time of the Punic Wars.

The box contains 8 frames, see below, each of which contains two figures, which have the typical format - torso and legs to which can be added arms and a head. There is a set of arms and a head for each figure, with no additional options - so basically enough to make two complete figures per frame.

Thus the range of poses achievable is similarly limited - you'll need to use your imagination and modelling skills to add more variety! That said the figures are moulded well - as we have come to expect from Rendara Ltd.
Velites Frame

From each frame can be made a figure holding a sword and another holding a javelin, there are two shields to pick from , one with additional javelins attached and for those troops who are to be modelled as veterans there are some Wolfskin cloaks to be added.
These figures are bigger that Warlord Games Imperial Romans, I have not yet compared to their Caeser's Legion offerings for a size comparison.
A good starter pack from a new company.

Warlord Games - 28mm Dacian Falxmen

Box Art
The Dacians, originally from what is largely modern Romania, were one of the Romans most fierce opponents, they fought two wars with Rome.

Fighting principally as infantry, the Dacians allied themselves with the highly skilled horsemen, and women, of Sarmatia, making a balanced and very powerful enemy force to fight, as the Romans found out to their cost.

The most terrifying and effective Dacian troops were those armed with the lethal falx – a wicked looking double-handed war scythe that could shatter a shield and carve off a limb with a single blow. So fearsome was this weapon, the Romans developed additional armour to protect arms, legs and heads from it’s devastating impact.

Figure Frame

The boxed set contains 42 plastic & metal foot figures, the plastics being based on 4 of the Celt frames reviewed elsewhere on this site, also included are full-colour waterslide shield design decals. Also included in the boxed set is a carnyx and a standard bearer.

The frames (see below right) are the basic Celt products, that are reviewed as such elsewhere on this site.

Figure Frame
The boxes set also contains a metal upper torso to allow to you to include a British Chieftain as well as new carynx and standards.

So, whether you are starting a new British army or merely looking to add more character to an existing Celt army these chaps shouldn't be overlooked!

Also contains superb, full-colour self-adhesive (not water-slide!) shield transfers to bring your models to life!

Gordon and Hague - 15mm Union Brigade

Box Art
As with their Confederate Brigade boxed set, Gordon and Hague's primary offering is a mixed set of Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery.

The figures in both Union and Confederate sets are the same, just the ratios of figure types being varied.

Figures should allow for the creation of 5 x 16 model Infantry regiments, 1 x 6 model Cavalry Regiment and 2 x Artillery sections.

In reality these numbers are a little short for 15mm games, where the infantry regimental size might more likely be 24 and cavalry more likely 12 models. Additionally a typical Artillery piece might be served by 3 or 4 figures on the table top, rather than just two.

The Union Brigade Box Set contains the following items:

20 Infantry with slouch hats advancing
50 infantry with kepis advancing
5 infantry captains
4 artillery crewmen
5 infantrymen with flagpoles
5 cavalry riders with swords
1 cavalry rider with flag pole
1 Mounted Officer
7 horses
2 artillery guns
20 pre-textured infantry movement trays
3 pre-textured cavalry movement trays
2 pre-textured artillery movement tray
1 pre-textured officer movement tray

Current availability of these sets is in Question

Gordon and Hague - 15mm Confederate Brigade

Box Art
As with their Union Brigade boxed set, Gordon and Hague's primary offering is a mixed set of Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery.

The figures in both Union and Confederate sets are the same, just the ratios of figure types being varied.

In this Union set you get more figures in kepis, in the Confederate set you get a greater number in slouch hats.
The same notes apply regarding regimental sizes that an be created with this set as applied to the Confederate set. If you do opt for a larger regimental size, it would free up some infantry officers who could supplement the artillery crews, that are very short in numbers in both sets.

The Confederate Brigade Box Set contains the following items:

20 Infantry with kepis advancing
50 infantry with slough hats advancing
5 infantry captains
4 artillery crewmen
5 infantrymen with flagpoles
5 cavalry riders with swords
1 cavalry rider with flag pole
1 Mounted Officer
7 horses
2 artillery guns
20 pre-textured infantry movement trays
3 pre-textured cavalry movement trays
2 pre-textured artillery movement tray
1 pre-textured officer movement tray
