North Star Miniatures / Osprey Games

Better known for their fantastic Men-at-War series, plus many, may more books that support historical wargaming and modelling, Osprey Books have turned their hand to publishing various Wargames Rules with partner companies such as Warlord Games and North Star Miniatures. As such they have set-up a sub-division of Osprey Publishing called Osprey Games.

North Star started as an online Wargames shop and has now diversified out to a number of different lines.

The partnership between North Star and Osprey Games has produced the popular 'Frostgrave' rule set and more recently 'Oathmark' rules. The partnership has now branched out into plastic figures to populate the Fantasy world that hey have created.

These figures are all in a Heroic 28mm scale and the frames are stamped with North Star Military Figures and Osprey Games for Copyright purposes, hence the listing here under both the North Star and Osprey banners.

Wargames Atlantic came into being in January 2019 and they specialise in 28mm Plastic figures, so just right up our street.

FireForge - Byzantine Spearmen

This box enables you to build 25 x Byzantine Skoutatoi in heavy armour.

You'll be able to build all as Spearmen or up to 10 armed with sword and the remaining 15 with spear. All the figures in the box can be assembled with two different types of shields, building early or later period Byzantines.

The box contains 5 Figure Frames, each with 5 x Torsos and 8 x heads.

FireForge Scandinavian Infantry

This box enables you to build up to 25 x Post-Viking Scandinavian Infantry soldiers in heavy armour. You'll be able to build up to 10 Bowmen, and/or up to 10 armed with two-handed axe, and/or up to 5 armed with sword, and/or up to 5 armed with mace, and/or up to 24 armed with Spear.

The box contains five identical Figure Frames and a single frame with bases, each frame has 5 x armoured torsos, 10 x heads, 2 bows and arms, 2 Two Handed Axes and associated arms, a sword arm and a mace arm. There are also 6 shields , 3 x round, 2 x kite and one other.

FireForge - Byzantine Auxiliaries

This box set enables you to build 25 x Byzantine Auxiliaries. You'll be able to assemble 10 x armoured archers and up to 5 x Slingers, up to 10 x light archers and up to 10 x javelin men. Obviously with just 25 torsos to work with you will be left with a significant number of pieces for your spares box!

The box contains five identical Figure Frames and a single frame with bases, each frame has 5 x torsos, 8 x heads, 5 x swords and shields.

Two torsos on each frame are armoured, the remainder are unarmoured.

FireForge - Sergeants at Arms

This boxed set contains 12 x 28mm multi-part plastic Sergeants at Arms with a mix of barded and unbarded horses.

You can build several types of Sergeants with a choice of many weapons among which you will find crossbows for assembling Mounted Crossbowmen units.

The set contains three Figure Frames,each with parts to make 4 riders, there are a selection of cloaks, heads, arms and shields to allow for considerable variety in poses.

Believe that there are two Weapons Frames in the set, with a variety of hand axe, sword and mace arms as well as six spear arms, as well as 6 crossbows on each frame.

ForeForge - Mongol Cavalry

This box set contains 12 x 28mm multi-part plastic Mongol Horse Archers of the 12th/13th century with a choice of many weapons among which you'll find bows, hand weapons, spears and shields.

Each of the three figure frames contains parts for 4 riders, with a variety of heads arms, weapons and shields that can be added to taste.

Standards can also be built from the pieces on each of these frames.

There are also 4 x Horse Frames each with parts for three horses, heads and tails can be swapped for added variety.

Conquest Games - Medieval Knights

This boxed set form Conquest Games is focused on the  at the period between 1100AD and 1200AD, just as colourful heraldry was beginning to be introduced and when armoured knights were beginning to assert their authority on the battlefield.

These are perfect for the European wars of the middle of the 12th to 13th Centuries, or the 1st and 2nd Crusades.

There are 16 x models in each box, which are provided on 1 x Command Frame, 3 x Figure Frames and 2 x Horse Frames. There is also a single Base Frame.

Mathematically that works out as 16 x Knights but 18 x Horses, which seems odd but should be viewed as a bonus!

Conquest Games - Medieval Archers

Box Art

This boxed set contains 28 multi-part, hard plastic Medieval Archers, you get 4 x Figure Frames plus 1 x Command Frames which are the same frames form their infantry box.

As an additional bonus you also get 2 x Weapons Frames, each of which contain another figure, this Weapon Frame is the same as the lower half of the main Figure Frame.

Despite being labelled as Medieval', these figures would work well as 'Dark Ages' archers as well, so have been categorised here as such.

Each figure frame contains 6 x torsos, 12 x heads, 6 x Long Bow Arms, 4 x Short Bow arms and 9 x 'other' arms in a variety of poses to represent figures loosing an arrow, pointing or placing an arrow onto the string.

Accessory wise, each frame also has 6 x Quivers and 3 x knives / daggers.

The Weapons Frame contains 6 x Long Bow Arms, 4 x Short Bow arms and the 9 x 'other' arms noted above plus 2 x Quivers and the 3 x Knives.

Overall a very useful set which adds variety to the Gripping Beast Dark Age Archers set, reviewed elsewhere on this site.

Gripping Beast - Late Roman Heavy Cavalry

This boxed set contains 12 x Late Roman Heavy Cavalry miniatures, there are 4 x Figure Frames, each with 3 models on the frame.

Inside you will find parts to assemble 12 finely-detailed armoured cavalry, fighting with either spear, sword or axe.

The box also includes a vexilla for conversion purposes.

The Late Roman Heavy Cavalry may be used to represent the armoured cavalry forces of any of the later Romans or early Byzantines.

Parts from this box are compatible with most parts from all other Gripping Beast box sets so you can do many, many conversions.

Inside you will find parts to assemble 44 finely-detailed ferocious Late Roman Infantry, armed with either swords, spears or bows.

The box consists of 8 x figure frames, see picture below, plus 2 x command frames. Each of the Figure frames has two archers plus three torsos that can be modelled with a number of different weapon options. There are seven different heads to use across the five figures on each frame to give variety.

The archer figures are moulded in firing positions so there is no flexibility with these two guys n each frame.

The set also contains two Command Frames each of which provide parts to assemble an officer and a musician or standard bearer.

The average soldier of the late Roman Empire could be found serving on the frontiers of Britannia, Germania or even in the east in Syria.

By this time in Romes history many of the legions comprised of auxiliaries recruited from a variety of vassals and allies, including Germanic tribes such as the Franks and Goths.
