Warlord Games - 28mm 1812-1815 Russian Line Infantry

This boxed set allows you to build 32 figures representing Russian Line Infantry in the Napoleonic Wars, fighting as they did, against the French.

The set actually contains 4 metal and 28 plastic figures. As usual the metal figures are to represent the command figures with a regiment, the plastic figures provide your rank and file.

As such, the set contains 7 frames (see above right), each of which allows you to build 4 marching figures. Assembly is simple, attach pack-pack & equipment piece and then select a head - for which you have option of a helmet with or without a plume- then you are done!

A great kit for building up the massed ranks required for any Napoleonic game but which is particularly important for Russian armies.

Warlord Games - 28mm Married Zulu Regiment

Box Art
The Zulu army was a formidable foe. Well-trained, well-led, and well-equipped for campaigns, the Zulu regiments were the terror of Africa. Created by the great Shaka, founder of the nation, each regiment was composed of small companies who trained together, and a regiment could be 1,000 men strong.

They were then brigaded together to form divisions that could move at great speed and with drilled precision, forming the classic Zulu attack formation of the Horns of the Buffalo.

The military system formed units into married and unmarried units, so a cadre of young men would be forced to remain unmarried on the King's orders until they had 'washed their spears' in the blood of their enemies.

They are armed with throwing spears, smoothbore muskets and the deadly stabbing short spear whilst their patterned ox-hide shields help identify their parent regiment.

Figure Frame
Once they were blooded, and only then, would they sew in the characteristic head ring which is the symbol of a mature and married warrior, showing his much enhanced status in society.

Each boxed set contains 8 frames, each containing enough parts to make up 4 figures., each figure is armed with a shield and a variety of weapons ranging from Assagis, Knobkerrys, rifles or throwing spear. Each frame also has 7 heads to add variety to the figures.

The leader of the regiment is a metal figure that is supplied with the boxed set.

Warlord Games - 28mm Dacian Falxmen

Box Art
The Dacians, originally from what is largely modern Romania, were one of the Romans most fierce opponents, they fought two wars with Rome.

Fighting principally as infantry, the Dacians allied themselves with the highly skilled horsemen, and women, of Sarmatia, making a balanced and very powerful enemy force to fight, as the Romans found out to their cost.

The most terrifying and effective Dacian troops were those armed with the lethal falx – a wicked looking double-handed war scythe that could shatter a shield and carve off a limb with a single blow. So fearsome was this weapon, the Romans developed additional armour to protect arms, legs and heads from it’s devastating impact.

Figure Frame

The boxed set contains 42 plastic & metal foot figures, the plastics being based on 4 of the Celt frames reviewed elsewhere on this site, also included are full-colour waterslide shield design decals. Also included in the boxed set is a carnyx and a standard bearer.

See also: Warlord Games - 28mm Celtic Warriors for more details on the original set and it's frames

Warlord Games - 28mm Ancient British Warriors

Box Art
This boxed set contains 4 plastic frames and enough metal parts to make 40 Ancient British Warriors. With several variants of limed hair and distinctive helmets (such as the 'Waterloo' helmet) plus new metal shields such as the Battersea-style shield, as a result the figures cut an impressive and rather worrying-looking bunch!

The frames (see below right) are the basic Celt products, that are reviewed as such elsewhere on this site.

Figure Frame
The boxes set also contains a metal upper torso to allow to you to include a British Chieftain as well as new carynx and standards.

So, whether you are starting a new British army or merely looking to add more character to an existing Celt army these chaps shouldn't be overlooked!

Also contains superb, full-colour self-adhesive (not water-slide!) shield transfers to bring your models to life!

Warlord Games - 28mm Ceasar's Legion with Pilum

This is the second boxed set in Warlord Games' new Ceasarian / Republican Romans, this set is with the Pilum.

As with the Gladius armed set there is the option of three command figures that comprises of  centurion, standard bearer and musician. This is the same frame as used in the Gladius armed boxed set and as with them, the basic legionary body is used to build up the specilist command figures from spare parts on the frame.

The frames include parts to build up a figure that is armed with chain mail, pilum, oval shield and Montefortino Helmet, also include arms with slings to provide an alternative missile weapon for the legionaries to use.

Warlord Games - 28mm Caesar's Legion with Gladius

Warlord Games is soon to release their new Ceasarian / Republican Romans, these are to be made available as 2 sets with Gladius or with Pilum. As can be seen this set is with Gladius.

The command frame comprises of  centurion, standard bearer and musician.

The frames include parts to build up a figure that is armed with chain mail, gladius, oval shield and Montefortino Helmet, also include arms with slings to provide an alternative missile weapon for the legionaries to use.

Warlord Games - 28mm French Line Infantry

Box Art
This release from Warlord Games sees a useful set of French Line Infantry for teh Napoleonic Wars, up to about 1812. The set consists of 28 x plastic figures supplied 4 to a frame, see below right, plus 4 x metal figures of an officer, standard bearer and drummer),

One figure on each frame has epaulette and is thus designed to be used as either a Grenadier or a Voltigeur, this ratio is rather high so some of the epaulettes can be carved off with a sharp knife to reduce the excess flank men back to the centre companies!

Moulding quality is excellent, with virtually no visible flash, the poses are very utilitarian, all figures are in a marching stance. This makes assembly easy, simply add a head and a backpack and you are done...

Figure Frame
... if you want variety then we'd suggest getting hold of some of the Perry or Victrix figures, they are totally compatible.

Back to the figures, as noted each frame has 4 figures, a selection of 5 backpacks (two with attached hangers) plus selection of 8 heads, wearing a selection of shakos, with or without plumes and / or covers.

Warlord Games - 28mm Celtic Warriors

Warlord Games released this boxed set with the aim using the two basic frames included with the set as the basis for a number of future releases.

This boxed set contains 40 multi-part, hard plastic 28mm Celtic Warriors, and the set consists of two each of the frames shown below, right and left.

Each figure can be built in a variety of ways, by combining seperate leg pieces with torsos and arms - to give an exciting variety of poses that you would expect to see in an irregular unit. With each figure comes a selection of weapon options such as spear, sword and javelins and with extras such as spare weapons, helmet icons and severed heads.

Uniquely the set also contains a set of self-adhesive shield stickers to add to the figures. These have come in foe some criticism , from some quarters - many preferring the use of transfers - as with the company's Roman infantry boxed set.

That said, with careful trimming, and application of varnish to ensure the 'stickers' don't peal, the end result is quite acceptable.

When constructing the figures, the initial thought is that there are almost limitless combinations of poses that can be made. This is not so - check the dress of the torso to the dress of the legs, the reality is that these are limited as you need to ensure armoured torsos are joined to armoured legs / waist s and similar to bare chested figures. This is not a problem - just a point to consider.

Warlord Games - 28mm Tribesmen of Germania

Warlord Games latest infantry set, based upon their original 'Celtic Warriors' boxed set, allowing 43 figures to be created (including 3 x metal command figures - included within the box).

All the comments made about the previous releases of these multi-pose foot frames apply. The Germanic characteristics are again achieved by the use of cast metal add-on parts supplied with the set, to give th expected selection of topknots, animal skins and other  tribal features.

The command figures include an impressive warlord plus a standard bearer and a carynx player, again as expected, perfectly proportioned for the plastic figures in the set.

Wargames Factory - 28mm WSS Artillery

Box Art

Wargames Factory Figures are now available via Warlord Games, where the sets have been re-boxed and re-branded accordingly

This boxed set enables you to build a two gun section of artillery from the War of Spanish Succession (WSS), as with other sets in this range, the figures are generic, so that they can be built and painted to represent any nationality.

The set contains two frames - see picture below right - each frame contains the parts to build one gun with either a 12lb or 6lb barrel. Additionally there are 4 crew figures which come, each moulded as a torso & legs, to which you can add a variety of arms to create a umber of alternative poses. Finally the frame contains a mounted officer to command the gun section.

As ever there are a few additional extras on the frame - as we have come to expect from Wargames Factory - a bucket and neat piles of cannon balls plus a couple of barrels.

Artillery Frame
For the price these are good value, the crew are workman like and represented well, as ever with Wargames Factory figures they do seem a little tall and thin to my eye. That said the mounted officer is very good - if  a little fiddly to put together as both his legs and arms are separate and they are all small! There are options for the officer to be waving his tricorne or his sword - take your pick.

The only disappointment is the horse, as with the horses in the WSS Cavalry set, there is something not quite right about them to me. (See more in that review - here) However, it would be a simple task to substitute another manufacturer's horse...

Wargames Factory

Wargames Factory Figures are now available via Warlord Games, where the sets have been re-boxed and re-branded accordingly

Wargames Factory is the first American company to appear on this site, it is also unique in that it uses computer assisted design techniques to sculpt and produce their offerings, which are manufactured in China.

Wargames Factory boxed sets are typically rich in parts - allowing many variations of pose to be achieved - yet to many people,  the quality of their figures is best described as OK not great.

That said, I think that the company has been the first to say that they have been going through a learning curve, their more recent output is of a much better quality than some of their earlier offerings. Their production techniques has meant that they have been able to get a lot of product to market in a relatively short period of time.
